About Haven...
As far as recording goes… it's what I do. It's what I have done now for 25 years. Twenty five years ago it was on the old Tascam cassette four track – it's kinda neat really cuz through the years it's almost like a "musical journal" – my gear has changed and evolved through the years – lots of "low fi" fooling with silly little casio keyboards and toys I would find at pawn shops – writing songs… batches of songs… and writing … stuff… experimenting… periods of time… "makin a CD"… recording live… drum machines, sequencers, midi, real drums, playin guitar… "crafting" a song… "workin the formula"… forgetting about all that… goin on tangents … getting weird with it – havin all kinds of people that come through my life… musician or not, I say, "hey man… grab an instrument and let me record you… Let's DO something"… and just recording all of it… back to myself… getting serious again… taking it further… surprising myself… writing a tune that I think is great… doing a cover song – but it's TODAY… and I'll just record it – add some guitar, bass, vocals, background vocals – half hour, maybe 45 minutes later… and I'm done with it – onto something else…
entirely.
I remember once I mic'd up the furnace in the basement, threw it through some intense flanger settings, recorded it onto tape, ran the tape backwards, then mic'd up the blender and mixed it down with some reverse guitar riffs, etc. It was a phase – there have been many phases – the free music stuff – and the jazz – and "end of the world " noise stuff – and the New Age stuff – and the spoken word days – and the musical meditations – the affirmation music – the blues – the reggae – the Moog stuff and the synth patch layers – both ugly and pretty – big and small – loud and soft – so many nights… with others (for periods of time) – and then … my favorite time in the world… just me… alone… in the studio – that has been probably where I have spent the most time – years… rituals… no rituals… and… the songs… it always comes back to the songs – it's such a great feeling to write a song! Such a wonderful manner in which to play with infinity – so many different ways to write a song, and to record – so many endless choices.
